ScotRail's Red List: Tackling Antisocial Behavior on Trains (2026)

ScotRail's 'red list' of train routes, which have been identified as having the highest levels of youth antisocial behavior and drunk passengers, has been revealed. This system, which uses a traffic-light rating, highlights the routes with the most issues, including trespassing, staff abuse, and event-related disorder. While the Stirling to Arbroath and Edinburgh to Dunblane routes were placed on the highest level, ScotRail has not disclosed the full figures, citing concerns over privacy and data protection. However, Freedom of Information requests have revealed that two routes through Fife were also given an amber rating due to vandalism and assaults on staff. The introduction of the traffic-light system is part of ScotRail's new data-led approach, which aims to allocate resources effectively. The Scottish Government-owned operator has noted a 33% decrease in youth-related incidents over the Easter period compared to the previous year, attributing this to the expanded travel safe team and increased investment in body-worn cameras. However, the issue of antisocial behavior on trains remains a challenge, with complaints on the Edinburgh to Glasgow service nearly doubling in the past four years. The role of the travel safe team extends beyond enforcement, focusing on engagement, education, and early intervention to prevent issues from escalating. While ScotRail is committed to making the railway safe, the question remains as to whether the current measures are sufficient to address the underlying issues of youth antisocial behavior and drunkenness on trains.
