The Corinthian Classic, a celebrated sailing event in Marblehead, showcases a harmonious blend of vintage, classic, modern classic, and one-design fleets, with a special emphasis on the spirit of tradition and modern classic yachts. This year's edition, the 27th, featured a diverse array of boats, from the vintage gaff cutter Viola, owned by Kostia Belkin, to the modern classic Farr 44 Africa B Squad, helmed by Jud and Cindy Smith. The event's unique format, a pursuit race, added an extra layer of excitement, with spectators witnessing a thrilling finish as boats of varying sizes and designs crossed the line simultaneously.
One of the standout moments was the performance of Intrepid, a large boat sailed by Ted Moore and Amy Drinker. Despite being primarily a 12-meter and team racing sailor, Moore found the Corinthian Classic to be one of his favorite events. The Classic Rating Formula (CRF) played a crucial role in equalizing competition among traditional, full-keeled, and historic vessels of different sizes and designs. Moore and Drinker's hosting duties and their own racing aboard Intrepid showcased the event's inclusive nature.
The pursuit race format, with staggered starts based on handicap, brought the fleet to the finish line at approximately the same time, creating a spectacle for spectators at Chandler Hovey Park. This format, as Jud Smith noted, offers great competition and a more extended racing experience, making it a popular choice for weekend competitions. The event's emphasis on tradition and modern classics has become a hallmark, attracting sailors from various backgrounds.
The Corinthian Classic also serves as a platform to honor the rich history of yachting in Marblehead. It celebrates the legacy of renowned boatbuilders like Bruce Dyson and Quin Vaillancourt, as well as yacht designer Jim Taylor. The event's popularity is further underscored by the presence of long-time competitors like Thomas King, who has been sailing in the Corinthian Classic for over 20 years. King's team, Valkyrie, races in the modern classic division and has consistently performed well.
